Figo Preto de Torres Novas Fig
Figo Preto de Torres Novas hails from Portugal, where the mother tree is part of fig-enthusiast, Jaime’s, collection. The fig was named after the town in which it was found in the Oeste region of Portugal. Although it is still a rare fig in the US, it has recently become beloved in Portuguese cooking. The variety was even featured by a popular gastronomy tour company called “Portugal on a Plate.”

As reported by Portugal on a Plate, Torres Novas had gotten a bad rap for being a “small and ugly fruit.” Its black, purple, and green cracked skin and low weight of 20-30 grams contributed to it being an underdog in the fig world. But when it comes to taste, Torres Novas has many other figs beaten. When you bite into the chewy skin you will reveal a yellow, pink, or light red pulp. The texture has some seed crunch to it, and the flavor is described as sweet with notes of melon. Good news for growers—this fig has the ability to produce well in cooler climates. Its trees will bear single or 3-lobed leaves.

When do we ship cuttings?
Non-Rooted Cuttings(November/December):
We begin to ship cuttings once the trees are dormant and in a shippable state. Exact timing is weather dependent, but we usually start in November. Shipping continues throughout the winter and early spring. We stop shipping when the trees begin to break dormancy, normally around mid-March.
**All non-rooted cuttings ship between November and March regardless of the date selected during checkout. Orders placed during our pre-sale period(October/November) will ship out first in November/December. If you are rooting your cuttings in the spring, our cuttings can be kept in the refridgerator until you are ready to root them. They will be perfectly fine. That is what we do and they've turned into our most impressive trees.
Rooted Cuttings(Spring):
We begin shipping rooted cuttings once they are mature enough to ship. The shipping period typically begins late April and continues into June. Regardless of the date you select during checkout, we will ship when ready during that span. Please do not ask for ETA's or specific arrival dates. You will receive an email when your order ships with UPS Ground tracking details.
