Mum City
Bristol, Connecticut has been referred to as “Mum City” because of its historic chrysanthemum industry. In fact, Bristol nurseries produced around 80,000 mum plants annually and acres of land were devoted to the crop. To this day, Bristol residents and thousands of tourists celebrate the Mum Festival, which features a parade along with other festivities. The festival began in 1962, and though production has slowed, some residents are still dedicated to hybridizing new strains of mum for sale within the United States and Canada.
To capture the spirit of Bristol, there are many varieties of mums that can be included in cut flower arrangements like football mums, daisy pom pons, button mums, red rover mums, spider mums, cushion mums, and cremones. Mums come in the beautiful fall tones of orange, red, burgundy, and yellow, and can also be found in green, white, purple, and lavender. In addition to cut flowers, mum plants grace many doorsteps in the fall. The plants add a pop of color all season long and can be planted directly into the ground to return the following year.
Have you ever considered giving a mum to your ‘mum?’ Mother’s Day is a popular occasion to send flowers. Many moms love these familiar flowers for their cheery appearance and longevity when cut. Ask your florist for a vase arrangement including daisy pom pons for a fun and youthful look. Or, choose a plant that will remind mom of your love all year long.
New Haven Pumpkin Heads
Connecticut also has another legendary connection to agriculture with the pumpkin heads. Before the 90’s bowl cuts, colonial New Haven barbers were using halved pumpkins as a guide to cut their clients’ hair. Thus, those who sported the dos were called “pumpkin heads.” They must have needed a shampoo after that!
Those looking to send flowers in Connecticut can also draw inspiration from pumpkins, especially in the fall. Flowers that come in orange hues include gerber daisies, alstroemeria, lilies, roses, spray roses, carnations, dahlias, daisy pom pons and gladiolas. Miniature pumpkins and gourds (whether real or faux) make great additions to fall flower arrangements. Or, consider an arrangement designed in a ceramic pumpkin container. The keepsake can be used year after year for autumnal decoration.
