Missouri, however, also bears another nickname whose origins are attributed to Congressman Willard Duncan Vandiver. In an 1899 speech in Philadelphia, Vandiver reportedly said, "I come from a state that raises corn and cotton and cockleburs and Democrats, and frothy eloquence neither convinces nor satisfies me. I am from Missouri. You have got to show me." From then on, the state became known as ‘the show-me state’ and the slogan can be seen on all Missouri license plates today. Missourians wear this moniker proudly as a sign that they are not gullible and require evidence before believing.
Flowers have always been used to express feelings, and therefore are a great gift for show-me state residents. To show how you feel, consider:
Show me love. Valentine’s Day and anniversaries are days set aside to show love to those most special to you. For a traditional symbol of love purchase red roses by the dozen, two dozen, or more. Those who have been with a partner for decades could send a rose for each year of marriage. If red roses don’t tickle your love’s fancy, though, send sunflowers, gerber daisies, stargazer lilies or any type of flower arrangement that shows how well you know their tastes in flowers.
Show me sympathy. When a friend or loved one passes away flowers can be used to express sympathy. You may want to send a one-sided, tall flower arrangement designed in a basket to the funeral service. This can even be customized with a ribbon banner with phrases like “Beloved Brother” or “Loving Grandmother.” Others, though, prefer to send a flower arrangement to the home of the deceased’s family. A basket of all white flowers makes for a traditional show of sympathy, while a vase of colorful daisies would also bring some cheer to the surroundings.
Show me gratitude. Has a friend helped you move? Has a coworker gone out of her way to help meet a deadline? Sending flowers is a great way to thank someone and show your appreciation. Consider the space to which you are sending the thank-you flowers. If the flowers are going to an office it’s a nice idea to send an arrangement that is already designed in a vase so that the recipient does not have to arrange the flowers at work. On the other hand, if you know of a friend with a fine crystal collection, send a wrapped bouquet that she can display proudly in one of her own vases. And a thank-you would not be complete without a handwritten note. Upgrade your flower arrangement by purchasing a personal greeting card through your florist. The recipient can keep the card message long after the blooms have faded.
