The Smallest State
Rhode Island is tucked next to Connecticut and Massachusetts in the North Eastern United States. It was, in fact, the first British colony to formally declare independence on May 4, 1776, two months before the Declaration of Independence was penned, according to Wikipedia. Thus, this 1,045 square-mile swath of land went on to become America’s smallest state.
Rhode Island’s residents, however, would surely tell you that size isn’t everything. Haven’t we all heard the adage that ‘good things come in small packages’? To send a petite flower arrangement reminiscent of the smallest state consider:
A cube vase. A cube vase is a perfect choice for a low and compact flower arrangement. A low arrangement can be viewed wholly from every angle, so it is a great way to show off unique blooms such as orchids, meaning that even though it is compact, the gift can still be grand. Additionally, some flowers naturally grow on a shorter stem, such as gloriosa lilies and ranunculus. These flowers lend themselves to a petite arrangement in which they can shine. Try sending a cube vase to an apartment dweller. The size and scale will likely fit the recipient’s home better than a large floor plant.
A single rose. This is a very symbolic gift. A red rose can signify a ‘one true love,’ whereas a white rose may serve as a remembrance for a loved one who has passed away. Although the single bloom is small, the impact of the sentiment will not be lost.
A succulent plant. There are several varieties of this trendy plant such as Haworthia and Echeveria. As part of the cactus family, these plants need sunlight, but little water, making them ideal gifts for friends missing the ‘green thumb.’ The diminutive plants look great potted in a modern, architectural container with natural stones to allow moisture to escape.
A Famous Wedding
In addition to being the smallest state, Newport Rhode Island is known as the site of Jacqueline Bouvier’s wedding to John F. Kennedy on September 12, 1953. The bride and groom, who were already the talk of the society pages, would later go on to become President and First Lady and would be called American Royalty. The two were married at Rhode Island’s oldest Catholic parish, St. Mary’s, and photographers were on hand to capture the whole event including the flowers. Flowers reminiscent of this famous wedding include:
A White Boutonniere. In photographs, John can be seen wearing a single white flower boutonniere. Florists recommend a white rose for its durability for those attending proms, weddings, or special ceremonies.
A White Hand-Tied bouquet. A hand-tied bouquet containing white flower such as stock, roses, and mums paired with dark cascading greenery will invoke Jackie’s bridal bouquet. The recipient should give the bouquet a fresh cut before placing it into fresh, room temperature water to give the blooms their greatest longevity.
