The Gem State
Since the late 1800s, many have flocked to Idaho’s streams in search of precious gemstones such as opal, jade, topaz, zircon, tourmaline, agate, and jasper. The most rare, however, is the star garnet. It is only found in Idaho and India. This precious stone got its name because its reflection is displayed like a four or six pointed star. While many of these 12-sided crystals are the size of a grain of sand, prospectors have found star garnets the size of golf balls in Idaho. From the 1940s-1980s gem production was an important Idaho industry.
Take a cue from this state nickname by selecting a flower arrangement in jewel tones like amethyst, emerald, ruby, garnet, and sapphire. These colors give a sense of sophistication and richness. Flowers available in Idaho’s famous ‘garnet’ include roses and gerber daisies. Other blooms that come in various jewel tones include carnations, delphinium, iris, hydrangea, statice, and stock. Jewel tone flowers are appropriate for many occasions including birthday flowers and anniversary flowers. If the recipient prefers manicured flower arrangements to youthful daisy pom pons, then a jewel tone arrangement is sure to be a hit.
The Birthplace of Television
Another nickname for the state is “the Birthplace of Television,” since TV’s inventor Philo T. Farmsworth called Rigby, Idaho home. This farm boy pioneered the technology for the vacuum tube television display after being inspired by the straight crop lines in Rigby. Farmsworth drew up blue prints for scan lines in televisions and the world would never be the same.
In those days, television was in black and white. Consider an all white flower arrangement to honor this Idaho native. All white arrangements make for beautiful and traditional funeral flowers. Roses, lilies, carnations, gladiolas, and football mums look lovely when arranged in a tall basket or standing spray. An added benefit to white flowers is that they match almost any home décor. Unsure of the recipient’s decorating style? A white flower arrangement will surely look divine on a country countertop or modern mantel.
If you prefer Technicolor though, there are many floral varieties to choose from. Multicolor flower arrangements are useful to express happiness or bring cheer to someone who may be having a bad day. Stick to one or two complementing colors to create a design with a harmonious feel, or pile on the hues to show wild excitement over a graduation, birthday, or other special event in your loved one’s life.
