Big Sky Country
The nickname “Big Sky Country” is a phrase borrowed from Alfred Betram Guthrie Jr.’s book Big Sky. This moniker appeared on Montana license plates from 1967-1975, and more recently the plates read simply “Big Sky.” With open plains in the east of the state, the skyline makes for a remarkable feature.
And the sky isn’t the only thing about Montana that is large. The state is the fourth largest in the U.S., but only ranks 44th in population. In fact, 46 of 56 counties in Montana are considered “frontier counties” because there is an average of six or fewer residents per square mile. This makes for lots of wide-open spaces, which gives residents the ability to stay in touch with nature like that found in Glacier National Park and Yellowstone National Park.
For a flower arrangement that is large like Montana, first utilize a large glass vase or ceramic container. Big feature flowers such as hydrangea, stargazer lilies, large-headed roses, cremones, football mums, and gerber daisies will fill in these luxury flower arrangements. A substantial floral design is great for many occasions including, anniversary flowers, special events, milestone birthday flowers, or sympathy flowers. Add in a touch of blue like delphinium, hydrangea, or iris and your loved one will instantly think of those azure Montana skies.
The Treasure State
Another nickname for Montana is “The Treasure State.” It earned this nickname back in the late 1800s when precious metals, sapphire, and a variety of minerals were discovered in the territory. This slogan also graced Montana license plates from 1950-1966. Today, the state motto is still “Oro y Plata,” Spanish for gold and silver, which were mined there. These treasures correspond with the anniversaries of:
Gold Anniversary. Gold is the right choice for 50th wedding anniversary flowers. Lovely white blooms with gold accents such as ribbons, painted gold leaves or berries, or a gold keepsake container will honor this milestone.
Sapphire Anniversary. This blue gem denotes the 45th wedding anniversary. There are a selection of blue flowers to choose from including delphinium, iris, hydrangea, bachelor buttons, tweedia, and scabiosa. Blue blooms are naturally less prevalent in the flower world, so this arrangement is sure to be unique and eye catching.
Silver Anniversary. Silver is associated with the 25th wedding anniversary. You can incorporate a touch of “bling” for a silvery shine like diamante pins or silver glitter dust on flowers. Silver wires can give a contemporary look to otherwise simple flowers.
