Details
Chicago Hardy is a purple/black fig. The figs grow from small-medium size, and have “pyriform” shape. This tear-drop shape allows the fruit to easily shed water during rains, giving them good resistance to splitting and spoiling. Chicago Hardy figs have red pulp with a good seed crunch. The pulp has a complex berry flavor and jammy texture. The trees will produce breba and main crops that are both early ripening.
Experts believe that Chicago Hardy originally comes from Italy, near Mt. Etna. However, this old world fig quickly spread around the globe. This resilient and gardener-friendly tree has been beloved for hundreds of years. The tree is not a super-fast grower and doesn’t take up much space, yet is highly productive. The figs require less sun than other varieties to ripen, and hang time on the tree is slightly shorter, meaning that growers usually cash in on this crop before pests.
And just because it’s a common fig, doesn't make it boring. Chicago Hardy came to the US along with immigrants from many European and Asian countries. Each with its own name attached, there are likely 100 or more synonyms for this variety that has thrived in almost every climate. Try Chicago Hardy for yourself because each of these adaptable trees takes on its own personality and flavor based on its growing conditions.

When do we ship cuttings?
Non-Rooted Cuttings(November/December):
We begin to ship cuttings once the trees are dormant and in a shippable state. Exact timing is weather dependent, but we usually start in November. Shipping continues throughout the winter and early spring. We stop shipping when the trees begin to break dormancy, normally around mid-March.
**All non-rooted cuttings ship between November and March regardless of the date selected during checkout. Orders placed during our pre-sale period(October/November) will ship out first in November/December. If you are rooting your cuttings in the spring, our cuttings can be kept in the refridgerator until you are ready to root them. They will be perfectly fine. That is what we do and they've turned into our most impressive trees.
Rooted Cuttings(Spring):
We begin shipping rooted cuttings once they are mature enough to ship. The shipping period typically begins late April and continues into June. Regardless of the date you select during checkout, we will ship when ready during that span. Please do not ask for ETA's or specific arrival dates. You will receive an email when your order ships with UPS Ground tracking details.
