Why is Self-Care so Important?
In a world where the average worker's schedule is 9am-5pm, people often struggle to find time for themselves. There is this innate belief that people must ALWAYS be productive - which can take away from the idea that they need self-care. When people do not find the time for themselves, they can find themselves going through a little something called burn-out. The World Health Organization defines burn-out syndrome as conceptualized by resulting from chronic stress from the workplace that has not been managed properly. This can lead to feeling a depletion of energy, negative feelings towards one's job, and feelings of being unable to complete one's job to the best of their ability. According to a survey by Deloitte, 77% of people reported experiencing burnout at their current job. 91% claimed that unmanageable stress or frustration negatively impacts their quality of work, and 83% said burnout could negatively impact personal relationships. Sound just a little too familiar? It can be tough, but fortunately, there are ways to combat it.
So What Does Self Care Look Like?
Self-care can truly be anything that prioritizes an individual's well being and mental health. The National Institute for Mental Health claims self-care can look like getting oneself outside for a walk, eating balanced meals, prioritizing sleep, engaging in a relaxing activity, setting goals for oneself, or focusing on the positives. Some days people just need to give themselves a second to breathe, and do something for themself that does not involve work. Having time to think about goals and do things for oneself, rather than imposing deadlines, is crucial to preventing burnout.
