Our Smith trees are very vigorous and some of the most productive on the farm. The small to medium brownish green fruits ooze honey from the eye and the flavor can’t be beat. This one is a favorite year after year. Smith is actually an heirloom Louisiana variety of fig. It was first introduced in the United States by the Becnel Nusery near New Orleans. Smith originally hails from Croatia, and it is rumored that several other varieties of figs were brought to the U.S. along with Smith that have never been identified. Smith fig trees waned in popularity and were in danger of becoming extinct before a surge of interest in the delicious variety brought it back into high demand.

When do we ship cuttings?
Non-Rooted Cuttings(November/December):
We begin to ship cuttings once the trees are dormant and in a shippable state. Exact timing is weather dependent, but we usually start in November. Shipping continues throughout the winter and early spring. We stop shipping when the trees begin to break dormancy, normally around mid-March.
**All non-rooted cuttings ship between November and March regardless of the date selected during checkout. Orders placed during our pre-sale period(October/November) will ship out first in November/December. If you are rooting your cuttings in the spring, our cuttings can be kept in the refridgerator until you are ready to root them. They will be perfectly fine. That is what we do and they've turned into our most impressive trees.
Rooted Cuttings(Spring):
We begin shipping rooted cuttings once they are mature enough to ship. The shipping period typically begins late April and continues into June. Regardless of the date you select during checkout, we will ship when ready during that span. Please do not ask for ETA's or specific arrival dates. You will receive an email when your order ships with UPS Ground tracking details.

The fruit of the Smith fig tree is known to have a nice acidic bite to it and a seed crunch. The honeydew that seeps from the eye is functional in that it minimizes spoiling. The skin is resistant to splitting, further protecting the fig. All of this makes Smith an overall great fig to add to your collection.
