City of Roses
Portland is known as the City of Roses because many varieties of roses were grown there dating back prior to World War I. The marine climate, warm summers, mild winters, and clay soils make the state an ideal location to grow roses. That is why a 4.5-acre sanctuary called the International Rose Test Garden was planted there in 1917 to preserve European rose varieties during the war. To this day, Portland holds an annual rose festival to promote the city. Roses are a classic and symbolic floral gift that are appropriate for:
Valentine’s Day. Valentine’s Day has long been celebrated with rose arrangements. These flowers arranged by the dozen express love for your other half. Roses come in many colors and varieties, so it’s likely that they will be available in your recipient’s favorite hue.
Anniversaries. Similar to Valentine’s Day, an anniversary is a time to express love with the classic symbol of roses. Each anniversary carries its own unique symbol, so along with your roses consider incorporating silver (25 years), gold (50 years), or even other symbols like paper, leather, or cotton. This will add a creative spin to the classic.
Congratulations. Nothing will bring a smile to someone’s face like being presented a large bouquet of roses. Roses can be designed in a tall, one-sided presentation bouquet appropriate for a graduation, a recital, or a special guest at a party. A bouquet that is beautifully wrapped and tied with a ribbon will look lovely in photographs for the special occasion. Ensure that the recipient re-cuts the stems and puts the flowers into water when he or she arrives home.
Oregon Navy Blue and Gold
In 1959, Oregon adopted navy blue and gold as its official state colors. These are also the colors of the state flag. It is a fun fact that Oregon’s is the only double-sided state flag. One side features the state seal and the reverse shows a golden beaver, which is the state animal.
Blue and gold can be incorporated into a floral arrangement for anyone who has pride in their home state of Oregon. Flowers that come in blue include: iris, delphinium, cornflower, hydrangea, carnations, and thistle. Blue is one of the most rare colors for flowers, so this arrangement may feature some unique varieties. Although there are no naturally “gold” flowers, florists can add metallic elements to the design such as a gold vase, gold ribbons, gold painted leaves and berries, or gold wires.
