Barran figs have dark purple skin that will have lots of crackling when ripe. It’s best to let these fruits hang on the tree for as long as possible, as they have a long ripening period where they will develop their signature crackled skin. The long waiting period to pick the fruit is worth it, however, because Barran figs are known for their superior flavor and texture. Starting with the tissue-thin skin, you will get a tart and sweet flavor. The tartness balances the complex strawberry and berry flavors found in the burgundy colored pulp. Many have described the flavor as complex, with some even finding hints of apricot and currant. The pulp’s unique texture has been described as candied, pasty, and dense. These small figs are almost like little drops of candy!
Barran figs are small to medium in size. They are considered an early ripening variety and are prized for their long fruiting period of several months. While the figs require a long hang-time on the tree, they have good resistance to splitting in heat and humidity. They have a closed eye that resists spoiling and pests. Barran trees, which grow 5-lobed leaves, are vigorous growers and some have reported that the trees grow in uniform and attractive shapes. Barran is on many fig growers’ wish lists because of the many positive attributes of this variety.

When do we ship cuttings?
Non-Rooted Cuttings(November/December):
We begin to ship cuttings once the trees are dormant and in a shippable state. Exact timing is weather dependent, but we usually start in November. Shipping continues throughout the winter and early spring. We stop shipping when the trees begin to break dormancy, normally around mid-March.
**All non-rooted cuttings ship between November and March regardless of the date selected during checkout. Orders placed during our pre-sale period(October/November) will ship out first in November/December. If you are rooting your cuttings in the spring, our cuttings can be kept in the refridgerator until you are ready to root them. They will be perfectly fine. That is what we do and they've turned into our most impressive trees.
Rooted Cuttings(Spring):
We begin shipping rooted cuttings once they are mature enough to ship. The shipping period typically begins late April and continues into June. Regardless of the date you select during checkout, we will ship when ready during that span. Please do not ask for ETA's or specific arrival dates. You will receive an email when your order ships with UPS Ground tracking details.
