Malta Black is a mediterranean fig from the island of Malta. More recently, it was part of the fig collection of Belleclaire Nursery in Plainfield, NY where it became available to US growers. This fig was a favorite at Belleclaire because it is early-ripening and has good resistance to rain and humidity. Malta Black is said to be a grandparent fig of the popular Celeste variety and although its leaves bear some similarity to Mt. Etna types, there is no relation between the two.
Malta Black has a purple/black skin and a round shape. It grows on trees with 3-5 lobed leaves that have a rough, sandpaper texture. Malta Black produces two crops of medium sized figs. Their thick skin and tight eyes give them the rain and humidity resistance that growers love. Inside, the light red pulp will have a burst of strawberry flavor and a sugary aftertaste.

When do we ship cuttings?
Non-Rooted Cuttings(November/December):
We begin to ship cuttings once the trees are dormant and in a shippable state. Exact timing is weather dependent, but we usually start in November. Shipping continues throughout the winter and early spring. We stop shipping when the trees begin to break dormancy, normally around mid-March.
**All non-rooted cuttings ship between November and March regardless of the date selected during checkout. Orders placed during our pre-sale period(October/November) will ship out first in November/December. If you are rooting your cuttings in the spring, our cuttings can be kept in the refridgerator until you are ready to root them. They will be perfectly fine. That is what we do and they've turned into our most impressive trees.
Rooted Cuttings(Spring):
We begin shipping rooted cuttings once they are mature enough to ship. The shipping period typically begins late April and continues into June. Regardless of the date you select during checkout, we will ship when ready during that span. Please do not ask for ETA's or specific arrival dates. You will receive an email when your order ships with UPS Ground tracking details.
