Valentine's Day roses Valentine's Day is right around the corner, which can only mean one thing—roses, lots of them! One of the most traditional gifts for the love-centered holiday is flowers, particularly roses. But how do you choose the right ones for your partner? Do you go with the traditional bouquet of a dozen red roses? That is a romantic and beautiful choice, but some might consider it unoriginal.

Did you know that rose colors, arrangements, and more send very specific messages about your relationship? Yes, you can go with traditional red roses or choose a rose that is your partner's favorite color, but if you want to shake things up, here are the best ways to select the right roses for your special someone.

Single Rose or Bouquet?

Before we get into the significance of rose color, let's talk about quantity. Should you send a single rose or a dozen? Perhaps something else entirely. Did you know that the number of roses you choose to give also sends a message? A single rose is perfect for people early in a relationship because it represents love at first sight, but in later years, it can also mean “I still love you.†Of course, if your partner is a huge fan of The Bachelor, it might be fun to give them a single rose and re-enact some favorite moments from the show. The same goes for lovers of Beauty and the Beast. Two roses suggest mutual love and affection, while six roses imply infatuation. Nine roses symbolize “forever,†and ten roses tell them that you think your love is absolutely perfect. The reason 12 roses are the traditional Valentine's Day bouquet is that a dozen roses say “Be Mine,†and ratcheting it up to 24 (two dozen) means “I'm Yours.†Twenty-one roses send a message of dedication. If you send 3 dozen roses (that's 36), you're saying that you're head over heels in love. If you really want to tell someone that your love for them is infinite, send them 50 roses (or more).

Colors

Red

Red is the traditional Valentine's Day Color for a reason. They signify love and romance in all its most traditional forms. It can also mean beauty, perfection, and unconscious beauty when given to a loved one.

Pink

If you're really happy with your partner or perhaps are a quieter admirer from afar, pink is a lovely choice. Pink can mean admiration, happiness, grace, gentleness, joy, and sweetness. Send a pink rose to the sweetest person in your life, or use it to say your partner makes you the happiest.

Salmon/Orange

A slightly different pinkish shade, salmon is a surprisingly sexy rose to send. They indicate desire, enthusiasm, and excitement. If you want to take things to the next level with your partner, give them salmon roses and let them know how you really feel and how much you want them. Similarly, orange roses can suggest fascination and passion.

Yellow

Be careful when sending yellow roses. They can imply friendship and a warm bond (so not terribly romantic), but they also suggest infidelity. Likely not what you want on Valentine's Day.Valentine's Day roses

Peach

Maybe you just want to send a warm “thank you†or suggest you're thinking of someone on the holiday. Peach roses are a perfect choice because they imply gratitude.

White or Cream

White roses have a variety of meanings—they can imply innocence and purity, but they also suggest new beginnings, so they might be a lovely choice for a new relationship. Some people consider them melancholy, however, as they're also associated with remembrance. However, cream or ivory roses send a different message entirely (I know, it's confusing)—they suggest charm and thoughtfulness, which is perfect for a platonic relationship, or something in the early stages when you don't want to send too intense a message.LavenderLavender roses are a wonderful choice for the hopeless romantic. They suggest enchantment and love at first sight. If your partner is a sucker for anything romantic, these are a beautiful choice.

Green

Green roses might look odd at first, but they send a beautiful message of renewal and rejuvenation of spirit. If your partner has given you a new lease on life, this is a lovely way to tell them so.

Black

Ok, so normally, you wouldn't send someone a black rose, but maybe your partner is a huge fan of The Nightmare Before Christmas or really into Gothic romance. A black rose could be the perfect way to send them Valentine's Day flowers while capitalizing on their interests.

Tissue Paper Roses

If your partner is extremely environmentally conscious, consider sending them handmade tissue roses. They will last much longer and are a beautiful alternative to typical flowers.

Whatever rose you choose for the perfect Valentine's Day gift, at the end of the day, Valentine's Day is about celebrating love. A little something special can go a long way in reminding your significant other how important they are to your life.
